Dear Supporters:

I recently logged onto Anysoldier.com and I saw that our address had been requested 87 times. I honestly cannot believe that there are that many supporters for my team. I am honored. With that being said, I wanted to send out my last update. While we still have a considerable amount of time until we are expected to leave, we are unfortunately running out of room based on the incredible amount of packages that continue to flow in. Additionally, there are numerous soldiers within my own team and at our higher headquarters who are also enrolled in Anysoldier.com or similar organizations, and we are beginning to lose the small free space we do have. Never fear though for those of you who have already sent your packages, we will make sure they are put to good use. Either the team guys happily take the boxes back to their little space or we package them back up and distribute them amongst the community. The locals are so appreciative of the socks, hand warmers, pens, pencils, and random food items. This is a far cry from their norm.

Bottom line: we are forever grateful for the selfless contributions we received. The men look so forward to the countless packages come mail day - these days with the increased snow we get mail about every 2-3 weeks, so needless to say, we get a ton of mail during each delivery. I am thankful for the correspondence and support from each and every one of you - some of you went way above and beyond any unofficial standard for support.

As this war comes an end in the very near future, we are suddenly going to find a lot of Soldiers without a job; the majority of our now seasoned fighting force will begin their transition back into a "peacetime" force. Fortunately for the Special Operations community is that we will always have a place to go and continue our missions outside of this country. Our missions will receive little to no publicity, which is fine by us, but always remember that there are American Military members out there somewhere in the world fighting small wars/battles to preserve freedom and help secure people from often tyrannical or oppressive governments. We embrace this charter and volunteered for this lifestyle.

Thank you specifically to the following people and to those who wished to remain unnamed: Krystal P. (MN), Richard J. (NC), Murrell W. (AZ), Lee S. (TN), Angela W. (VA), Haylea S. (IL), Gail B. (MD), Mary Ann G. (CT), Lester T. (CA), Sherree G. (UK), Leah J. (NV), Hinsdale Dental, LLC. (IL), and Lauren D. (NJ), Troop 888 (OH), American Legion Post #218 (CA), Bob and Marcia L. (CA), Kathy C. (CO), Kit K. (CA - repeat offender from my Korengal Days), Center for Rehab Services (PA), Sara K. (NY - The College at Brockport), Marcy L. (MI), Janet H. (MD), Mario T. (CA), Care Packages from Home (Lester T., CA), Kathy B. (PA), K. (SC), Pat G. (IL), and Michelle & Michael (WA), Gianna J. (PA), Jenny M. (NC), Marilyn S. (CA), Amelia K. (TX), Christina O. (TX), Gay G. (MI), Trey L. (TX), Union League Club of Chicago (IL), David G. (KS), John & Cisca B. (TX), Pack 252 den 8 Sub Scouts (PA), Christine S. (CO), Janet H. (MD), Kathleen W. (IL), Glenn & Anna M. (ID). Of course, there are still packages that are on there way, so thank you to all those folks as well.

Again, thank you for your continued support. You helped bring a piece of America to us time and time again. I will look forward to sending out another Anysoldier.com request when I am back here next time.

Dear Supporters,

The packages and letters have been coming in steadily since my last update. The team has been stationary for the better part of the month, so we receive most of your packages on a very frequent basis. Bottom line, if we are not consuming the goodies you send, then we either hand the packages off to our Afghan partner forces or hand them out to the local families we see daily. The goods are being utilized, and I want to thank you for your continued support.

Since my last update, the following people/families/organizations have been kind enough to send packages or letters our way: Troop 888 (OH), American Legion Post #218 (CA), Bob and Marcia L. (CA), Kathy C. (CO), Kit K. (CA - repeat offender from my Korengal Days), Center for Rehab Services (PA), Sara K. (NY - The College at Brockport), Marcy L. (MI), Janet H. (MD), Mario T. (CA), Care Packages from Home (Lester T., CA), Kathy B. (PA), K. (SC), Pat G. (IL), and Michelle & Michael (WA).

It is honestly so refreshing to hear the letters of encouragement and appreciation. We think of this as our duty, responsibility and honor, yet we sometimes forget that there are Americans who are actually thankful for what we do and what we provide to our country (and the world). I appreciate every one of you and how you contribute to our sanity while abroad.

The winter is rapidly approaching. It snowed heavily last week (about 4-6 inches), and we are expecting heavy snow later this week. It usually doesn't start snowing all that much until around Jan or Feb here. Last year it snowed 3 feet or more each time in this area. We work at around 6,900 feet with the upward max around 10,000 feet. The snow isn't all that bad, but it gets extremely cold here (last year in Jan-Feb it averaged around -15 to -20 degrees. This should make for an interesting time when dealing with the locals, the enemy and the weather. With all that being said, the men are doing well. Their spirits are high and they continue to impress me daily with determination, motivation and resolve to make a difference. You would be proud of them just by seeing what they are capable from day-to-day. Unlike a lot of conventional soldiers, it blows our minds that troops take days off (typically the weekend), only work from 9-4 daily in their warm offices, take a shower a day, three hot meals daily, and never heard/seen a bullet fired in anger. My men survive and prevail in the most austere environment where the rubber meets the road and I wouldn't have it any other way. At least we won't have to lie to our friends and families about our contributions while in war (I have an Uncle who served in Vietnam multiple times, and he also mentioned the huge dichotomy between the front line soldiers and everyone else). It is sad, but I am also a realist and I recognize/appreciate that we need support personnel to keep the operational tempo moving forward. Without them (in certain respects) we would be living off of the land and relying on the local population for support. Wait-a-second, do some research on Special Forces and you'll find that we are designed to operate in that manner. And I digress.

Thank you again for all the support. Keep warm, enjoy the Holiday season, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Dear supporters,

We are still getting a steady supply of care packages, which are just great. I am getting a lot of 2nd and 3rd time offenders now, but I won't turn them down. All the goodies are surely welcome. In fact, this time around, supporters are much better listeners than last time. I got a lot of "junk" in the mail last time. I honestly can say that everything I have received for the team has been useful stuff for either us or the locals. I really appreciate that.

There have been some letters asking about us and what we do exactly. I will attempt to explain without giving up the mystery of a deployment, OPSEC, or your own research. We are a Special Forces Team. We operate in the fringe areas where the conventional troops are reluctant to patrol, yet that is the environment where we perform the best. In fact, we prefer to live in the most austere, hostile and unforgiving areas because, frankly, that is where the enemy lives and operates. Our goal is to train the indigenous forces to secure themselves; while this is a very difficult and inherently dangerous mission, we are trained to conduct business by, with and through the locals. When the conventional forces begin leaving Afghanistan, we will still be here for years to come, just like we were before this war became sensationalized or captured in the media (Afghanistan existed in the shadow of Iraq for the better part of a decade). Hopefully that will give you an idea of how we like to and need to work while deployed.

To date I have received correspondence or a package from the following people: Krystal P. (MN), Richard J. (NC), Murrell W. (AZ), Lee S. (TN), Angela W. (VA), Haylea S. (IL), Gail B. (MD), Mary Ann G. (CT), Lester T. (CA), Sherree G. (UK), Leah J. (NV), Hinsdale Dental, LLC. (IL), and Lauren D. (NJ). Thank you all so much. BTW: We are still playing catch-up from our last move, so if you sent something and your name isn't on here, hopefully we get your package soon.

Again, thank you for your continued support. I know the men enjoy a bit of home from time-to-time.

Respectfully and thankfully,

CPT Mike Moad

Dear supporters,

We have finally made it to our next resting location. Who knows how long we will be here? I expect that we will remain in this province for the remainder of our deployment, which spans the long, cold and snowy winter. We have moved from the desert plains to the mountainous region - the two areas couldn't be any different. Nevertheless, we are in a good place. The team wants for very little at the moment, but we are always in need of support. The standard packages are more than welcomed: propel drink mixes, almonds (any other nuts too), trail mixes, beef jerky, dried fruit, fruit cups, powerbars (clif bars or any protein bars work as well), gum, baby wipes, magazines, and hiking socks. I think those are the major items that guys always enjoy getting in the mail. And, of course, the guys appreciate the nice letters, cards and/or pictures from home. As of recently, here are the names of the generous supporters: Mary Ann G (CT), Lester T (CA), Sherree G (UK), and Leah J(NV). FYI: since we recently moved, we are expecting our mail to arrive to our site within the next two weeks or so.

I attached a picture of the team at our last site - VSP Maktab.

Thank you so for your continued support - it makes a difference.

Sincerely,
CPT Michael Moad

Dear Supporters,

We have already received a number of boxes and a few letters to our site. Thank you very much for your continued support. It really makes a difference for the Soldiers who
haven't received anything at this point in the deployment. Thank you for listening to my requests on what we need to make our lives a bit more comfortable - the last time I used Anysoldier.com I had a different experience with numerous supporters sending stuff that we couldn't necessarily use at our remote site.
This is especially important because it takes a significant effort to move these packages across the world, but more importantly my Team has to risk their lives driving on dangerous roads against an unpredictable enemy in order to
pick-up these said packages and haul them back to our VSP.
I want to ensure that our time is utilized to the best of our abilities and that guys are getting the goods/support they need instead of miscellaneous stuff.
Nevertheless, currently I have no such reservations about the support we have received thus far. As for the supporters, I want to personally thank the following for their contributions: Krystal P (MN), Richard J (NC),
Murrell W (AZ), Lee S (TN), Angela W (VA), and Haylea S
(IL).
Thank you so much for your packages and letters - my men and I appreciate your thoughts and support. While I would love to correspond with each and every supporter, it is not feasible this time around. My last use of Anysoldier.com I was able to hand write a thank you note to each person I received a box and
tried to keep that up for the entire 12 months abroad, but I had a much easier job then with a lot less responsibilities and operational demands. Nonetheless, thank you for your support. You are our link back home.

NOTE: We are going to move to another operational site within the coming weeks.
Please hold on to your packages for now until I am able to send another update with a new address. Rest assured that all the packages that are in transit now will eventually get to us at our new site (it might take a few weeks, but the postal system here is reliable enough).

Thank you again for all that you do. My team and I are keeping the enemy at bay and are slowly improving the quality of life for Afghans, one day at a time.

My name is Michael Moad, and I am the Commander of my team here in Afghanistan. I used Anysoldier.com during my last deployment, and it was of huge benefit to my team's morale and health. This time, yet again, my team is located in an austere environment, where we are living day-to-day with the limited supplies we have on-hand. We are currently without running water, but we live under a hardstand structure when we aren't patrolling day and/or night. We conduct multi-day patrols, live amongst the populace and live, work, and sleep alongside our Afghan partners. We do have a cook, yet the supply chain is erratic at best, simply because we are located in such a hostile area. Therefore, we have to purchase local goods from the village bazaar to keep from eating MREs for our entire deployment. Surprisingly, we do have electricity, but it is infrequent and subject to the generator's maintenance and fuel supply. Obviously our connectivity is reliant upon the generators as well, so our outlet to the outside world and home is often sketchy. After talking to my team, we came up with items that would be of most use while we are deployed. While I would like to welcome a large variety of items, please only provide the items needed because we are limited on space and only need these specific items. The items or categories are: pens/pencils for the local children, socks (hiking specific), drink mixes, books/magazines, hard candies (again, for the local kids), beef jerky/slim jims, dried fruit, gum, HYGIENE products (i.e. baby wipes, deodorant, toothpaste, soap (liquid is best), canned soups/stews, powerbars/clifbars, nuts and beanie babies (or any very small soft dolls to pass out to the kids). Any of these items would certainly improve the quality of our lives while away from our families but also of the locals in the area. I really appreciate the support from everyone. I look forward to talking to you if time permits. Thank you.
